Interview with “Bo Gotta Go” author Mark Reed-Edwards
Little England: Where did the idea for “Bo Gotta Go” come from?
Mark: Believe it or not, we have a five-year-old Portuguese Water Dog named Bowie.
In 2018, we lost our first Portie, Cosmo, when he was 12. It was hard to think that another dog could be as wonderful. But we missed having a companion around.
So, a couple of months after losing Cosmo, we welcomed Bowie into our lives. He’s related to Cosmo, so we still feel Cosmo’s presence. And they’re very alike in many ways. Bowie’s so full of fun and always eager to get up and get going.
One day I just uttered the words “Bo gotta go” as we were getting ready for a walk and they rattled around in my head for a while until this story magically appeared.

Little England: What do you think the message of the book is?
Mark: I don’t think there’s a big message. But if there is one, it’s really about enjoying every moment, like dogs do. They don’t think about the past or worry about the future.
They are focused on what’s happening now. For kids, it’s about the joy every day brings. If you want to experience joy, just take a dog for a walk through the neighborhood or a run in the back yard.
Little England: How did you bring the book to life?
Mark: A few years ago, I worked on a little board book as kind of a greeting card to welcome my first grandchild into the world. It was a wonderful experience and during the process I met Gau Silva, a wonderfully talented artist.
As this book started to take shape in my head, I had a vision for how I wanted it to look on every page. And I knew Gau could bring that vision to life. It really is amazing to see it in print.
